Plan for music magazine

Today's lesson we had to think about what House style of my music magazine but first it depends on what type of rock genre that I am doing so I have to look at my responses from my questionnaire to see what are peoples favourite rock genre music then I can choose which one is the respondents favourite one then I use that.
The type of rock genre affects the house style because different house styles suits certain magazine genres, also the same with the name of the magazine will only suit the rock genre.

My plan is to look at my questionnaire and to choose an rock genre and to a house style that suits the rock genre.

Second draft Questionnaire

I made a second questionnaire and in this questionnaire its up to ten questions this time also I have made it easier for the respondents to know if its a they can answer more than one question  and I have made a "14 and under" because I don't who buys rock music magazines and its important for me to cover ever age also I have mix the questions ordering a bit so this makes it different from the first questionnaire.

6) How often do You Purchase a Rock genre magazine? I asked this question because I want to know how often people buy magazines if its weekly or monthly or they never had.

7) "What feature is important for you to see in a rock genre magazine?" The type of question is an rating scale.I asked this because its important for me to know what feature that the audience thinks is important to see in a rock genre magazine so I know what to put in my rock genre magazine, the rating is always, pretty often, not that often and never are the rating and the ones on the side are the features that are being rated. The features I put that is being rated Band/Artists Reviews, Competitions, Music Chart Update, Promotion of up-coming(Concerts and Festivals), Articles about Artists/Bands, Reader Interaction(Crosswords, Sudoku and New Albums Review,

and I want to see which one option is the one that the respondents feel that it is important for them to see in a rock genre magazine and which one is pretty often that the respondents see and so on.

8)What Content Would You Expect to see in a Rock Genre Magazine? I asked this question because I want to know what the respondents think of the type of things that is expected to see in a rock genre magazine. This question is a more than one answer type of question.

10) What kind of Features attract your attention within a front cover of a magazine I asked question because its important for me to know what attracts the respondents to read a rock genre magazine and the options I put is a Main image of a person and Colour also Famous quotes because from my research I now know its one of those things that rock genre magazines and other music magazines do.

Respondent 1 was a male who is 17 or under of age and his favourite genre was classic rock and the colours he thinks he see in a rock magazine is Red and Black and he is also willing to spend £2.00-2.99 on an music magazine and the type of content that he often sees in a music magazine is competitions and Band reviews and the content he always sees is Promotions of up-coming events(concerts and festivals) and article about artists/bands.


Respondent 2 is a male who is 17 or under of age and in question 2 he chose the option and said that all of the above this means he likes all of the rock genres that is on the question.He isn’t willing to buy an rock music magazine also the kind content that is always in a rock genre magazine is a music chart, Promotions of up-coming events(concerts and festivals and Articles about popular Artists/bands.

Respondent 3 is a female that is 17 or under of age and her favourite rock genre is classic rock and the colours that she sees in rock genre magazines is black and red, The content that she always sees in a rock genre magazine is Promotions of up-coming events(concerts and festivals). She is willing to  spend £1-£1.99 on a rock genre magazine.

 Respondent 4 is a male who likes the rock genre rock and roll, the type of colours that he sees in a rock genre magazine is black, red and grey and how much he willing to spend on a magazine is £2.00-£2.99 and the contents that he often sees in rock genre magazines is competition and the content that he sees all the time is Article about popular/Bands.

The questionnaire allowed me to know what types of things to put in my music magazine for example: I know now that most people are willing to paid £1-1.99 on a magazine and this will affect what price I should put on. I know that the respondents who answer it are students so it will make sense for me do to have the price range suitable for students.

Today I had to think of what to put in Questionnaire and now I made my first draft and when I gather the results from it I will be able to make another questionnaire to see what I might put in my Rock genre magazine.
A questions besides 4 and 6 are multi choice questions where the answer is available and the respondents can choose only one or type in the options box, question 4 is a multiple answer question where the respondents can choose more than and question 6 is a rating  type of question its always, pretty often, not that often and never are the rating and the ones on the side are the features that are being rated.

 Also I need to wait for people to answer my questionnaire to give me some Ideas.

My first two questions in my questionnaire are the basics because its important to know who are my target audience and the questions is "What is your gender" and "What is your age".

The third question is "What type of Rock genre are you interested in?" because my music magazine is going to be on rock but I don't know what type of rock due to there's a lot of rock music out there so I hope I can use the questionnaire to find out what type of rock music I am using for my music magazine.

The fourth question is "What type of colours do you see in rock magazines?" I used this in my questionnaire because I want to know the types of colours I could use for my questionnaire also the colour scheme of any is always very important because the audience can get attracted to things due to the colour of it and dislike something due to the colour and the colours that were available was 'Red', 'Black', 'Blue' and 'Grey' I choose these colours because I what I gathered from the Research of music magazines rock genre magazines usually has one of the colours that is in my questionnaire also the it was a choose more than one option.

The fifth question is "How much are you willing to spend on a rock genre magazine?" because I want to know the price range on what people are willing to buy for a rock music magazine.

The sixth questions is "How often do you see this kind content in rock genre magazine?" this question is important because this aloud me to know what type of rock genre magazines uses that type of features and I can apply this to my music magazine.

Structure of Magazines

Today I traced all the magazines that I previous selected before and the pages that I traced was the front cover, Contents page and a double page spread I did this so it makes it easier for me to see the structure of the magazines because of all the text and images also this will help me understand the structure of each magazine to give me ideas on my music magazine to help me for my main task

The four magazines that I traced is jazz journal, Classic pop, Kerrang and Classic rock.


Jazz journal layouts
Front cover

This layout is a basic front cover of a magazine.

The masthead is at the top so the audience can see it and this is the same for all the magazines. 

It doesn't really have features that stick out to get the audiences attention 

The barcode code is horizontal at the bottom of the page.

Contents page

Here is the layout of the contents page in jazz journal magazine, the layout shows that from this magazine there is a lot of information in this magazine if though there isn't much pages.

It boxes all on the left are pictures and they are people who are in the magazine  are in the magazine and this aloud the audiences to know what articles that is in the magazine are talking about.

The rectangle in the middle is informing what is in the magazine.

The boxes that are on the left side is informing the audience who made the magazine how many magazines that they made and what the editors think about that magazine and describing what in the magazine.

Here is the layout of the double spread page in jazz journal magazine, the left page of the double spread page, the wider box is a image, and the rest is text or titles.
The headline is at the top because so the audience can see the what this page is going to be about.

Left page

The box that is at the top is headline and should be at the top due to it helps the audience knows what happening on this page.

The box that is below the headline is a deck because its describing the article in a short version of it

The box that is at the right side of the page is a pull-quote of how monk describes Kenny Barron and that’s the top of the page because when the audience is reading the text the pull-quote will be there for the audience to know that what monk says is important. The biggest box is an image of Kenny Barron (a medium close up shot).

Right page

The biggest box that is at the top is another picture of Kenny Barron.

The article has a lot text this mean the target audience is older for example: 40 and 50s because they have a lot of time to read all these long article also a jazz magazine is more likely to have older target audience than younger because when the older people were young they will know who these famous people are so that’s why they are more likely to be older target audience.

The box at the bottom left is another pull out quote that shows how Kenny Barron cares about a singers choose because in the article he states that “singers have things they like to sing, so that’s how it should be, their choice.” This also shows how he thinks about his partners because it going with what they think instead of his own opinion.

Contents page 

There is two content pages this shows that they are a lot of information in this magazine also it shows it has lots of pages.

The rectangle is vertically up is a headline, and the box next to it is a picture of a Philip Oakley who is on page 24, then two boxes below are pictures. Then below that is the text explaining what features that are on what page.

Then next to the text on the left side is social media a text saying “follow us” this is stating that the audience should follow them also if the audience does this means they will get more likes on their page.

On the right page there is 6 boxes that contains pictures one of prince and kylie Minogue and other people then below that is more text explaining what is on what page then on the right side of the page at the bottom is a “subscribe” and “Subscribe to Classic pop, save 25% and get some deluxe Tears for fears” this mean that the audience will get a deal if they subscribe to classic pop.

The box that is at the top is the headline, in the box below the text is bigger this shows that this text must be important.

The biggest on the page is an image of a band that is on page 40 in magazine, the semi-circle on the top right corner is the headline. There is a lot of text that is in this page and its all informing the audience to know what’s on each page. The banner is from the people who help created the magazine.

Left page

The headline takes up more of the space. For the headline to take up a lot of space this means that it must be important for the audience to know the headline also the headline links with the story of the article because the headline is "CAUGHT IN A WEB" and Maria Brink in new album at the time is called Black widow also the album is about her life and how she feels about her life and she might feel restricted to do certain things.

Also theirs and picture of a woman on the next page and she looks trap and needs to be protected so she caught up.

Her life not being perfect in her life that means she caught in web.
Then there's a deck below the headline.

Right page

There's an medium shot of Maria brink this helps the audience   to identify the person who the article is talking

Her pose look likes she needs help also her pose draws the audience because now they want to know what happens to her also that's the reason why its big.

The box on the top right is a pull quote of what Maria Brink said "I WILL MAKE MYSELF SICK TO BE CREATIVE" and its there to show that its important.

The biggest box at the top is the masthead and its there so the audience can know whats the name of the magazine and it can attract them also it wouldn't make senses for the masthead be at the bottom.

The circle shape is a teasers and its trying to promote the magazine so the audience will be more likely to buy the magazine more.

There are plugs information about the contents signalled on the front cover some of the boxes are.

The boxes next to his knee states that  a "cover story" ,"36 Queen + Adam Lambert" and this attracts the audience to want to read the cover story on page 36 also it states a quote from Roger Taylor a member of Queen “After Freddie we said: ‘That’s the end.’ But Queen just didn't seem to die” it there to show how important that quote is. 
The spikey circle at the bottom of the page has text in it and the text states "WHATS ON YOUR FREE CD p91" and this now makes the audience want to know what's on the free CD that they got with the magazine.
In the box on the right side of the page some of the text in that box is red this shows that what the content page on must be important also it gets the audience attention due to it stands out and they want to read it.

The box next to the guitar states that on "76 David Bowie"  and then its a quote from him "It was really just the most depressing night of our lives, Nobody even looked at the stage."  because of this quote the audience is now engaged and want to know what happened on that night so they will go on page 76 to find out more about David Bowie story.
Same as the other contents page read text.
This time on the spikey circle at the bottom of the page states "SUBSCRIBE AND GET AN OFFER WORTH £459"
it set at that place because when the audience is reading the content they will see it and they want to read it because it states out.

The big box at the top of the page is the headline of the article and its a the top because it's important for the audience to see also its that big to show that its important for the audience to know what the headline is.
The deck is at the very top page and above the headline this very unusual because usually the headline is first than the deck this must mean that the deck is introducing the story must be more important than the headline.
The box at the very bottom at is a pull quote from Roger Taylor a member of Queen. its the same one from the content page, and the connotation of it is that its Roger Taylor's opinion about the band queen futures and how without Freddie it shouldn't been the end but that’s not the case.

Because of my research I now where and why the magazines are set the way they are for example: jazz magazines don't really have must contents or teasers on the front cover like kerrang or Classic rock and pop because its not trying to attract younger audiences also on kerrang they have so must content and teasers because they are trying to get younger audiences to buy there magazines and that's why the have free gifts like posters of  the bands and artists because younger audiences are more likely to put up the posters on their bedroom wall than older audiences. The way the magazine is set is depending on there target audience and its to suit them so that the audience will buy there magazines.

I am going to analyse the language devices that has been used in a Double page spread for each of the magazine that I have selected and talk about what is the purpose of the language feature and the effect of using that language feature in the magazine also how it effects the audience too,

Kerrang

Language Feature	Purpose / Effect
(Metaphor) “Caught in a web”	To show how she feels in her life and effect is has on the audience is that they are interested in her life and wants to know how is she caught in a web.
“Conquer her demons and learn to love them.” (Metaphor)	The metaphor goes with the article because in the article it states that she candidly explains how she feels and that how she conquered her problems in her life.
“When she did the album there was a relief in her voice like she happy that she finished something” (Emotive Language)	The emotive language in this phase is relief and happy because it’s a feeling and its showing how she was able to express how she feels while singing the song so the stress is gone when she sang the songs.
“There’s a lot of suffering out there, and a lot of people who are misunderstood-that song is about the fact that together we can climb out of hell.” (Emotive language)	The emotive language in this phase is suffering because it’s a feeling and it’s about how people might the same experience and feeling in their lifes.

Classic POP

“I’m so pleased to be able to go and sing Love action (I Believe in Love) in front of people” (Emotive language)	The word ‘pleased’ in the text is emotive language because it’s how Phillip Oakey feels and the effect it gives is that the audience might be happy that he likes to perform so they might feel closer to him.
“It’s that thing of ‘we’re not musicians’ that means that we’re proud of being associated with those songs” (Emotive language)	The word ‘Proud’ in the text is emotive language because it’s how Ian Peel feels about their music.

“He’s a bright” (Emotive Language)	The emotive language in this text is the word “Bright” because its describing how Kenny Barron talks about Dave Holland
“I don’t like to involved” (Emotive Language)	The word like in the text is emotive language because its describing an emotion of Kenny Barron of how he doesn’t like to get involved when choosing materials with singers he believes that its should be their choose.
“What makes that piano/bass mix so attractive?” (Personification)	The word attractive in the text is personification because it’s giving an object human qualities because objects don’t look attractive.

Classic Rock

Language Feature	Purpose / Effect
“Queen REBORN”	To get their attention because says reborn and reborn means something comes back better than before usually so it’s the same thing for the band they are back better than ever.
“After Freddie we said: “That’s the end.” But Queen didn’t seem to die”	This means that Queen is not going to die for a while due to their new member Adam Lambert that has made queen to be reborn.
“It’s Bloody miserable” (Emotive language and imagery)	The word miserable in the text is emotive language because it’s describing how Roger Taylor thinks of the double-album version also the word Bloody is imagery because it’s not that miserable and it’s exaggerated,
“It’s an awful lot for people to take it in” (Imagery )	The word awful in the text is Imagery because it’s describing how much the audience is taking when listening to the double-album version.

Ideas for questionnaire 
Today I am thinking of what to put in my questionnaire to help me for my main task so I can apply it into my music magazine.
In my questionnaires, I am not going to have leading questions because that will be slightly influencing the people who is going to answer my questionnaire also its important for the questions and answers to be specific because if I have options like 'often' and 'occasionally' the information will be inaccurate because people's interpretation of things might be different so this means the information will be inaccurate for me to use if this happens.

I now know what my music magazine is going to be about, its a Rock magazine but I don't actually know what type of rock genre I want to use so in my questionnaire I am going to ask about what music genre people want of rock and then I can make decisions on what to do for music magazine also I find out what is going to be my target audiences.
